Services We Provide And Fees

Palliative Care and Pain Management

INITIAL VISIT

($280)

During this visit, we will review and discuss your pet’s medical history, perform a complete physical examination, observe your pet in their home environment, discuss goals and expectations, and address any questions you may have. Upon completion of our visit, a plan to address your pet’s specific needs will be presented.

Please understand that our doctors do not perform diagnostics (Bloodwork, X-rays, etc.), surgery, give vaccines, or other important services provided by your primary care veterinarian. Should those services be desired you will need to seek the guidance of your primary care veterinarian.

Please allow two hours for the initial visit. The entire two-hour period may not be necessary, but it is important we do not feel rushed during our discussion and assessment.

This visit will include follow-up communications via email or phone for one month. After one month, we will schedule a follow-up visit to assess your pet and create a plan to continue with palliative care.

Any supplies or medications will be charged separately.

FOLLOW-UP VISIT

($105)

Follow up visits may be needed if you are observing any changes with your pet or their response to prescribed medications.

We will address any concerns or questions you may have. You may simply need reassurance that your pet is continuing to experience a good quality of life.

Whatever the need may be, rest assured we are available to help you through this challenging time either through in-home visits, phone consultation or email.

Quality of Life Exam and Assessment

($155)

This type of visit is for families who need time to address quality of life concerns. We will discuss the expected changes that may occur due to your pet’s ailing health and how to monitor your pet.  When the time comes, we will provide guidance to help you make an end-of-life decision. We will discuss how the end-of-life process occurs and any questions or concerns you may have related to this topic. We will not discuss your pet’s current medical plan in-depth or recommend any adjustments. If you prefer this is discussed, please schedule a palliative care and pain management visit.

Pre-Euthanasia Consultation

($135)

Pre-euthanasia appointments for aggressive pets can be scheduled to discuss concerns, better assess the situation, explain in detail the process, what to expect, and dispense oral sedatives/medications that may be needed prior to the end-of-life appointment.

Euthanasia And What To Expect

First, we will have a brief phone or email consultation to establish your needs, help answer any questions you may have or discuss any special requests you may have. Upon arrival, our doctor will go over paperwork and take care of payment beforehand so we may focus on your family and pet during our visit. If there is a special ceremony that you would like to perform, our doctor would be honored to be involved or they can step aside and wait until everyone is ready for our doctor to proceed. Our doctor will greet your pet and when you are ready, they will administer a sedative/anesthetic to help your pet into a deep sleep. At this time, your pet will be free of any pain or suffering they may have been experiencing. Once your pet is in a deep sleep, our doctor will proceed with euthanasia when you are ready. A solution will be given to gently stop the heart. This usually only takes a few moments, and our doctor will let you know when your pet has passed. You will be able to spend as much private time as needed with your pet before we make the transition to the vehicle if aftercare is desired. It is our goal for your pet to experience nothing but the familiar surroundings, sounds, and love found only within your home as they drift into a deep sleep and gentle passing.

CANCELLATION POLICY

While we do understand that cancellations are sometimes unavoidable, short notice cancellation limits our ability to help another family during that scheduled time. Please let us know of any changes with a 24-hour notice. If a doctor arrives or a cancellation request is less than 2 hours before the scheduled time, we kindly reserve the right to charge the full cost of the visit. If the cancellation is due to the natural death of your pet, this fee will be waived.

Please understand that this fee system is necessary for Paws to Heaven Veterinary Care PLLC to continue providing our exceptional and dependable care.

FAQs

Not at all. After receiving the initial sedative/anesthetic, your pet will be in a peacefully deep sleep, unaware of their surroundings, and free of any pain.

We recommend allowing other pets to be present for the entire euthanasia process or having them say goodbye after their housemate has passed. This will often provide closure to housemates. Many pets will become anxious in the days following the passing of their housemate. They may search for their friend or seem depressed when not given closure.

The injectable medication they receive following sedation/anesthetic will turn off their brain signals which will in turn stop the heart and lungs from functioning.

Texas State requires a waiting period of 10 days to ensure the pet has not shown symptoms of rabies. Consult animal bite law euthanasia guidelines for more information.

A typical appointment takes anywhere between 30 minutes to 1 hour. We want you to take as much time as you need with your pet while they are sedated. Once the final injection is given to your pet, they will pass immediately or within a few minutes.

Yes, we encourage you to be present during the procedure. If you are uncomfortable at any point let us know. There is nothing wrong with stepping away for the final injection if you are uncomfortable. This is your personal decision, and we want you to be able to grieve in your own way.
